In a Bazi chart, one of the eight characters is you. It is the stem sitting on top of the Day Pillar, and it is called the Day Master. Everything else in the chart is described by its relationship to that one character, which is why finding it correctly matters more than anything else you will read here.
Your Day Master is the heavenly stem of the day you were born. Not the year, not your zodiac animal, and not the hour. There are ten possible Day Masters, made by pairing the five elements with yin and yang: Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin Fire, Yang Earth, Yin Earth, Yang Metal, Yin Metal, Yang Water, Yin Water.
You cannot work it out from your birth year, and there is no shortcut you can do in your head. The day stem runs on a sixty-day cycle that ignores the Gregorian calendar entirely, so it has to be counted from a fixed reference date. Enter your birth date in the calculator and it is the character labelled Day Master.
If you only take one thing from this page: your zodiac animal is your birth year. Your Day Master is your birth day. They are different characters answering different questions, and the Day Master is the one that describes you.
The Day Master is not a personality label bolted onto a chart. It is the reference point the chart is measured against. Once you know it, every other character in your chart acquires a name based on how it relates to that stem: what supports it, what drains it, what it controls, what controls it. Those relationships are the Ten Gods, and they are the substance of a reading.
This is why two people born on the same day in different years get readings that share a spine but diverge in detail. The spine is the Day Master. The detail is what the other seven characters are doing to it.
It also means a Day Master on its own tells you less than people expect. Yin Metal in a chart full of Fire and Yin Metal in a chart full of Earth behave differently, because in the first case the thing that shapes it is relentless and in the second it is buried. The stem gives you the material. The rest of the chart gives you the conditions.
These are compressed to the point of being unfair. Each one has a full guide with the cost, the work that suits it and the single habit that raises its ceiling.
This is the part most sites skip. The sixty-day stem-branch cycle has to be anchored to a known reference date, and a reference date that circulates widely in English-language material is off by two days. Any calculator built on it returns the wrong Day Pillar for every birth date, which means the wrong Day Master for roughly a fifth of users and wrong Ten Gods for all of them.
There is a second failure that is easier to spot. If you were born between roughly 11pm and midnight, many systems assign you the wrong day entirely, because in this system the day changes at 11pm rather than midnight. A birth at 11:20pm belongs to the following day's pillar.
The third is longitude. The chart runs on true solar time, not the clock on the wall. Being an hour off inside a wide time zone, or having summer time applied and never removed, moves the Hour Pillar and occasionally the day.
If you have had a reading before and the Day Master does not match what you get here, that is worth resolving before you read anything else. There is a separate guide on the two-day error with the reference date and the arithmetic.
Read your Day Master's guide first, then check three things in your own chart. First, the month branch, which decides whether your Day Master is well supported or thin. A strong and a weak Yang Fire want opposite strategies. Second, whichever element is scarce, since that is usually where the Useful God sits and where a small deliberate habit pays the most. Third, whether the chart contains the element that disciplines yours, because that is the correction you cannot supply yourself.
Do not collect Day Master descriptions for people you know and use them to predict behaviour. The chart describes tendencies and their costs. It does not tell you what someone will do next week, and anyone selling that certainty is selling something other than Bazi.
