Bazi is bookkeeping, not prophecy. It records the state of a moment in a fixed notation and then reads relationships inside that record. Once you see the notation, most of the mystery goes away and something more useful takes its place.
A Bazi chart is eight characters. The year contributes two, the month two, the day two, the hour two. Each pair is called a pillar, and each pillar has an upper character drawn from a set of ten, and a lower character drawn from a set of twelve.
The ten upper characters are the Heavenly Stems. They are the five elements, each in a yang and a yin form: yang wood and yin wood, yang fire and yin fire, and so on through earth, metal and water. The twelve lower characters are the Earthly Branches, the same twelve you know from the zodiac animals, though in Bazi their animal names matter far less than the element and the hidden stems they carry.
So the whole chart is a small table. Four columns, two rows. Nothing in it is random and nothing is a symbol you have to take on faith: the year pillar is determined by the solar year, the month pillar by the solar term you were born in, the day pillar by a continuous count of days, the hour pillar by which two-hour block your true solar time falls into.
The upper character of the day pillar is called the Day Master, and it stands for you. Everything else in the chart is read as a relationship to it, which is why two people born in the same year and month can have completely different readings.
This is the single most important structural fact about Bazi, and it is also where cheap software fails. The day count is continuous, running unbroken across centuries, so it depends entirely on having the correct reference date. Get that wrong and every single reading the tool produces is wrong, even though it will look perfectly plausible.
If a chart tool gets your Day Master wrong, nothing downstream can be right. It is worth checking against a second source before you take any reading seriously.
The four pillars are also read as four life areas, sometimes called palaces. This is where a star or an element sits determines what part of life it touches.
The same star means different things in different pillars. A charm star in the year pillar says something about how you were seen growing up. The same star in the day pillar is a statement about your marriage, which is a materially different piece of information.
Once the eight characters are set, you count elements. Wood, fire, earth, metal, water. There is no ideal distribution and no score to maximise. What matters is the shape of the imbalance.
An element you have none of is a missing function rather than a curse. No metal usually shows up as difficulty finishing things. No water shows up as an inability to rest. An element you have three or more of is not a superpower either. Too much fire means speed and visibility you cannot regulate, and the bill arrives as burnout and words you cannot retract.
Reading a chart well means naming those two lists honestly and then doing something about them, which is why the useful output of Bazi is a set of habits rather than a set of predictions.
It does not tell you what will happen. It describes tendencies in you and conditions in a period, and the interaction of those two is where people read events. A pressure year does not deliver a promotion or a breakdown; it delivers pressure, and which of those two you get depends on how you pace yourself in it.
It also cannot tell you about anyone else from your chart alone. Readings that claim to describe your future spouse in detail are describing the shape of your own tendencies in partnership, which is genuinely useful, and then overstating it.
Treated as a mirror it is a good one, because it is specific enough to argue with. Treated as a forecast it will disappoint you, and treated as an excuse it will cost you years.
