The Ten Gods sound esoteric and are actually arithmetic. Take your Day Master, take any other character in the chart, compare their elements and their polarity, and you get one of ten labels. Those labels are what a reading is built from.
The five elements act on each other in fixed ways. Wood feeds fire, fire makes earth, earth holds metal, metal carries water, water grows wood. That is the producing cycle. Against it runs the controlling cycle: wood breaks earth, earth blocks water, water puts out fire, fire melts metal, metal cuts wood.
Relative to your own element, any other element is therefore in one of five positions. It is the same as you, it is what you produce, it is what you control, it is what controls you, or it is what produces you. Each of those five splits in two depending on whether the polarity matches yours, giving ten.
That is the whole derivation. No interpretation has entered yet.
Notice that money is what you control and pressure is what controls you. That framing is doing real work. A chart heavy in wealth characters is a chart oriented toward acting on the world. A chart heavy in officer characters is oriented toward being acted on by structures, which is not weakness but does predict where the friction is.
Within each category, the matching-polarity version and the opposing-polarity version behave differently, and the difference is consistent. The opposing-polarity version is smoother and more socially legible. The matching-polarity version is rawer and harder to contain.
Direct Officer is rank earned by conduct: rules followed, reputation intact, promotion arriving on schedule. Seven Killings is the same controlling force without the mediation, which is why it reads as crisis, deadline and command rather than orderly authority. People with Seven Killings prominent tend to do well in demanding environments and poorly in comfortable ones.
The same holds for output. Eating God is relaxed production, the work you make while unhurried. Hurting Officer is talent that overflows the container, which produces both the best work and the argument with your manager.
A common mistake is to find one flattering god in the chart and build the whole reading on it. What actually matters is the distribution across all eight characters, plus which one sits in the month pillar, because that position carries the most weight in determining the chart's structure.
If three or four characters fall in the same category, that category is your operating mode whether you like it or not. Four wealth characters means you will chase opportunities; the question is only whether you build a system to keep what you catch. Four peer characters means you measure yourself against people constantly, including people who are not competing with you.
The Ten Gods do not tell you what to want. They tell you what you will keep doing anyway, so you can stop paying the avoidable part of the price.
Find the god sitting on your month pillar. That is usually your structure, the thing classical texts name your chart after, and it says more about how your working life will go than any other single character.
Then count categories and find the largest. That is your dominant orientation and it should inform which fields you choose, not just how you behave in the one you are already in.
Then look at what is missing entirely. An absent category is a function you will have to hire, marry, or deliberately build, and knowing which one saves a great deal of wasted effort.
